Dr. Murphy completed his Ph.D. in clinical Psychology from Auburn University in 2003. Prior to joining the clinical psychology faculty at the University of Memphis in 2006, he completed a clinical internship and a postdoctoral research fellowship at Brown university.

Dr. Murphy is interested in substance abuse and addictive behaviors, and particularly in research that attempts to understand how substance abuse patterns develop, change, and remit during young adulthood. Although individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 show higher rates of drug and alcohol use than any other age group, their substance use patterns are relatively malleable and sensitive to social-contextual influences, including brief interventions.

Adult Entertainment District:

Memphis city council member Shea Flinn wants the city to study the idea of creating an "adult entertainment district" for strip clubs and other sex-oriented businesses.

I agree with Mr. Flinn that Memphis should have an adult entertainment district. It seems that the drugs and crime in this city
seems to be done openly in our community surely more than in the clubs?
I see drug dealing every time I drive in certain areas of this city. I see
police stopping cars that obviously law abiding people trying to get
to work, but one block away I see drug dealing and prostitution all around them. I doubt very seriously if having an adult entertainment district will hurt the reputation that Memphis already has as it relate
to crime and poverty in the city.  I think that if you talk to the elderly
in our community that can not go outside for fear of getting shot or mugged they would not blame it on adult entertainment. They will surely say to the officials that they should get rid of the gang bangers
and,the out of control children from fatherless homes, and immoral
mothers.
If you google Memphis you will find Memphis to be #1 or #2 of the most violent cities in the country. And, this is I guess because we do not have adult entertainment? This being true then there must be another reason such as politics that is the problem.
Why does the city allow the church to dictate what is good and evil in the community? What if the city dictate to the Church that they
must help the poor with the monies that they get from the poor? What if the city ask the church why they have so many unwed mothers in their church? Surely, they would scream seperation between church and state should the state decide to tell them how they should run the church house?
Remember, the ten commandments apply to them as well right? How can you be an unwed mother if you didn't commit fonication?
If you live in a glass house don't throw stones? If you ask me the church is filled with every single thing that they see as wrong and sinful. Is it not true that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory? If the church feels the need to judge someone start with the man in the mirror. Pointing your finger at others only shine the light on yourself. If anyone does not like the adult business I suggest that you don't participate in them. They will do just fine without your support! If I don't like a thing I don't hinder others from doing so. I mind my business and allow others to do so even at their own peril.
The universal God gave all of us free will. Why do you care about what others do with their own personal will.
. Why are the city officials shutting down the adult entertainment, and allowing the unruly youth (which is the real problem) do as they please? Is it all about politics or is it really about politics?
Do you notice that when there are certain elections for certain offices yet another club is shut down?
If you really want to do something that will benefit the image of Memphis, shut down the gang bangers,  place a curfew as was done years ago whereas it was against the law for young people to be out after a certain time of the night. This Sir is doing something
that we as a community will thank you for. I'd rather drugs and prostitution be done in a club than in front of my neighborhood!

The Conversation: The Influence of the Home
Saturday November 10, 2012
KWAM990 ( The Voice of Memphis)

If you ask me the influence of the home is ground zero for all good and evil in our community. The right kind of home can provide the right start in the world of a child. It is a common saying " manners make the man," and a second is that "mind makes the man." However, I believe that "home makes the man." As I look out into the community and see people out of control and out of order my first thought is "home."  I can imagine the home life that these individuals come from. I think of children from fatherless homes, broken homes, mother's that are loose in the world that are living immoral, indecent lives in the presence of their children!

I believe that the mother should be the "Star" of the home. A bright shining star for her children to love, honor and respect.
If the star is not shining in the home, and has no positive energy to share with the children we will see much of what we witness everyday in our community.  Betty Lamarr and guest co-host Jackie Anglin will have a conversation about the importance of the Mother's role in the home, and her influence on her children.  My advice is that if you as a mother do not want to do the hard work of rearing children in the right way that they should go, please do the world a favor by not having kids in the first place. It is indeed just as easy not to have them as it is to do so!   Jackie Anglin, previously an educator will  enlighten us about exactly what educators in the public school system  deal with on a daily basis. as it relate to how children behave and the tragedy of not having a mother to be the "Star" in the home.
